Through the Student Lens 2024

The 15th Annual Student Photography Show, Through the Student Lens, at Image City Photography Gallery, is a captivating and enriching experience, showcasing the talent and creativity of the budding photographers from 21 schools.  The exhibition features a diverse range of images that demonstrates the unique perspective and artistic vision of the student photographers.

Don Menges, Coordinator of Through the Student Lens

Image City Photography Gallery Partner Don Menges, has been the coordinator of this show since its inception.  Don says, “I have enjoyed putting this show together every year.  It begins every fall and continues throughout the year until we have all the student photos from the teachers.”  Don admits it is a tough task to install over 200 photographs on the walls of Image City, but he attributes his fellow partners to helping to get it done, and says “It’s difficult and challenging, but oh so rewarding when it’s all up.”  He also says that it has been a huge benefit to receive the donated printing and mounting services from Michael Hager (Michael Hager Prints) and Jason Campbell (Frameworks).

One of the standout features of the exhibition is the diversity of subjects explored by the students through their photographs, with many images telling a unique story and evoking a range of emotions. From vibrant street scenes to intimate portraits, each image offers a unique perspective on the world around us.  The range of techniques employed, from black-and-white classics to experimental digital manipulations, adds an eclectic nature to the collection.

What truly makes the exhibition special is the palpable sense of passion and dedication evident in the photographs.  It is clear these students poured their hearts and souls into their work, resulting in a display that is not only visually stunning, but also deeply emotive. The level of skill and understanding demonstrated by the artists hints at promising futures in the photography world. Don and others have mentioned that this year’s group of photos has been especially strong. Don believes that this is a direct result of what the teachers and their students “have learned, given the opportunity to share their work in a public and professional space.”

The event itself is a testament to the power of community and collaboration.  The supportive atmosphere, filled with enthusiastic visitors and fellow photographers, foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual inspiration. Conversations sparked by the photographs lead to discussions about technique, composition and the stories behind the images, creating a rich tapestry of shared experiences.
