The art world is constantly evolving, and at Image City Photography Gallery, we’re thrilled to introduce a fresh and inspiring perspective as we welcome Nicholas Jospe as our newest partner. With a background as a pediatrician who specialized in children’s diabetes, Nicholas brings a unique blend of compassion, insight, and creativity to our community. As he transitions from the medical field to photography, we are excited to explore his captivating landscapes and stories, fueled by his love for travel and the great outdoors. Like so many of us, a parent had kindled his initial interest in photography. He says his mother continuously encouraged him never to lose interest in this field. He says, “After retirement, and/or upon being told to heed this advice: feed the soul, feed the body, feed the mind, feed the community; I found that focus into this vast photography world feeds, in part, at least, all four of these domains.”
Nicholas Jospe’s path to becoming a photographer is a story of continued transformation. His experiences as a pediatrician instilled in him a profound appreciation for life, resilience, and the beauty of human connection—qualities that now enrich his photographic vision.

Nicholas says he suspects that he is “a visual person much more than say, musical or literary.” He explains that some experience in an improvised darkroom, and early printing experiments all fed the creative fibers during all those years of medical school. He says, “This modest ability co-existed later with my chosen subspecialty, where a good sense of observation came in handy, and where, fortuitously, there is an iconography that has benefitted greatly from photography. Indeed, until photography instilled some order, so much medical portraiture and misrepresentation was in keeping with the exaggeration of the sardine that sank the boat. So, while I was not so much doing the medical photography during the professional years, I was using photographs extensively for teaching.” Eventually Nick found opportunities as well in biomedical research and the photographic representation of its purposes.
When Nicholas first started showing images at Image City, he says that the opportunity allowed him to learn from others and prompted him to attend workshops and join photographic groups. He says, “It was intriguing to learn about the community of photographers at Image City and about the gallery’s place and unique role in the city.”

With a desire for a creative outlet and an understanding of the therapeutic power of nature, Nicholas began to explore landscape photography during his travels. Each destination became an opportunity not only to capture the nature of a vista but also to convey emotions, stories, and moments that reflect his journey.
Nicholas’s landscape photography is more than just a visual pursuit; it’s a way to fuse his love for travel with his passion for the outdoors. This fondness was facilitated by a childhood living in Europe, with French essentially as his first language. He says, “Add to that now a good bit of Italian and German, and now the luxury of more time, and this has enabled more opportunities off the beaten track.” Each of Nicholas’s photographs tells a story of adventure, often depicting mountains, or tranquil lakes, or expansive skies that leave viewers yearning for their own explorations. His deep appreciation for nature and the environments he encounters are evident in every frame.

Drawing inspiration from outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, and bicycling, Nicholas captures the essence of each location. He believes that it’s not just about the landscape itself but also about the experiences one has while immersed in it. His photographs reflect the thrill and wonder of adventure, inviting viewers to embark on their own journeys through his lens. An early project was his “red bike” pictures. Since Nicholas is an avid bicyclist and has in this manner learned much about the geography and culture of Upstate New York, and ever since the iPhone has existed, he says, “I have had it with me while out on the bike. This has led to an ongoing project whereby the bicycle participates in whatever captures my eye while riding.” He explains this has been variously commented on as “comical, oye-oye-oye, silly, this can’t be real, funny, or clear evidence for trespass!”
At Image City Photography Gallery, Nicholas aims to create a dialogue between the artwork and its audience. He believes that photography serves as a means of connection, just as his medical career did. By sharing his images and the stories behind them, he hopes to inspire others to appreciate nature, foster emotional connections, and perhaps even explore their own creative pursuits.

When Nicholas ponders about how the evolution of technology might impact the art of photography, he says that “if permitted this misappropriation,” he would start with the well know prayer that begins with “grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” He says, “I would replace the words ‘me’ or ‘I’ with the word, photography.’ Overall, we know there is not really much serenity around currently with all the picture taking going on. Yet, Image City’s efforts, as well as those of countless others, bring us back to the contemplation of images made with focus. And that brings serenity, yes. So, I would say that I hope that we can continue to use technology to support the gallery’s mission and enhance the viewer’s experience.”
Nicholas Jospe is embarking on an exciting new chapter with his partnership at Image City Photography Gallery. With a blend of compassion, adventure, and artistic vision, he is poised to elevate our community and inspire fellow photographers and enthusiasts alike. We are excited to see the ways in which he shares his unique perspective of the world. Here’s to new beginnings and the limitless beauty of life captured in photography!
